“The thought manifests as the word
The word manifests as the deed
The deed develops into habit
And the habit hardens into character
So watch the thought and its ways with care
And let it spring from love
Born out of concern for all beings
As the shadow follows the body
As we think so we become.”
From the Dhammapada – the sayings of Buddha
Each of our artisans has an underlying passion to help others – they are driven by aspirations of something bigger than their own lives. For Dan, this was embodied in the desire to establish a library in his adopted village; he believes education is key to overcoming poverty. With a handful of books, a tiny 8′ x 8′ space offered by a member of the community and volunteers to supervise the children, he started the library. Back in the United States, all of our artisans’ stories were shared with the House of Talents team as we worked to build the company. Jen, a Creative Designer, took note of the stories as she helped us with design, and brought Dan’s story to her first grade son, Kellen.
Dan’s desire for a library then became a project for Kellen’s class; each child was asked to bring in their favorite book to donate to the children in this far off place. From there, the first graders took over; they donated their favorite book(s) to Dan’s library. In January of this year, Jen delivered the books to Dan’s library in Ghana, giving it new life. In turn, the children in the village submitted drawings depicting their feelings of gratitude to their new friends in Alameda. Currently, the first graders in CA are compiling the artwork they received and will combine it with their own into a special book they plan to send back to the distant continent and their friends in Ghana.
